Invoice payment — paying after receiving goods rather than at the moment of purchase — has deep roots in Dutch and German commercial culture. AfterPay was founded in the Netherlands in 2010 to bring that familiar concept into e-commerce, offering consumers the option to receive products and pay within 14 days, with the risk of non-payment absorbed by AfterPay rather than the merchant. The model is straightforward and powerful: merchants get paid immediately, consumers get the ability to inspect before committing, and AfterPay manages the credit risk in between. AfterPay built strong penetration across Dutch and German e-commerce before being acquired by Arvato Financial Solutions, and subsequently became part of the Riverty brand under Bertelsmann. The AfterPay brand has remained in use in the Benelux market, where it has strong consumer recognition. It is worth noting that this AfterPay is distinct from the Australian AfterPay acquired by Square — a naming coincidence that reflects how independently the BNPL model developed in different markets. In the Northern European BNPL landscape, AfterPay's invoice payment model represents the more conservative end of deferred payment: familiar, trusted, and deeply embedded in the e-commerce checkout experience of a generation of Dutch and German online shoppers.
